High winds kicking up Thursday

SKHS has a power outage, sends students home early.

PORT ORCHARD — South Kitsap residents, get prepared for another stretch of windy weather that promises the possibility of a night illuminated by candlelight.

As forecast earlier this week, a winter windstorm has arrived in the area, with gusts predicted to reach 50 miles per hour today, accompanied by periodic rain squalls.

And with the wind and rain comes more downed trees — and resulting downed power lines in the county.

South Kitsap High School released students today at 12:30 p.m. due to a power outage on campus. The school district also announced that evening and after-school activities at the high school have been canceled.

Facebook users are reporting as of noon today that power has been lost at Sidney and Lippert avenues, portions of Mile Hill Drive, Retsil, Colchester, Bravo Terrace and Olney.

Kitsap Transit also announced today that all fast ferry sailings are canceled due to high winds. Puget Sound Energy hasn’t yet provided a list of outages in the area of its website.
