PORT ORCHARD — Following the EF-2 tornado that damaged homes and businesses in Port Orchard Dec. 18, Kitsap Credit Union has made available a new disaster recovery loan program for those affected by the twister.

Victoria Gingrey, a spokeswoman for Kitsap Credit Union, said two loans are available, one of which is a no-interest loan of up to $5,000, with no payments required for 90 days. The loan offer is valid for applicants who can show they live in the area impacted by the tornado.

A second loan variation offers $5,000 at a 1-percent annual percentage rate payable over 24 months. It also includes a no-payment-required for 90 days feature.

The credit union also has donated $10,000 to support tornado disaster efforts undertaken by United Way of Kitsap County and the American Red Cross. It also has supported work the past three weeks by South Kitsap Helpline, CEO Shawn Gilfedder said in a news release.

“As a mission-driven cooperative, KCU has been in this community for over 85 years helping those around us through big moments in life, even those they never dreamed they would face,” Gilfedder said.

“Our employees are personally vested in the success of our communities and our South Kitsap branch has been right there with those individuals affected by the storm. We’re currently exploring different ways that we can roll up our sleeves and join the community in rebuilding.”
