Olympic finishes second, Central Kitsap third at 2019 Swimvitational

The Trojans were tied with Gig Harbor entering the final race

EAST BREMERTON — Gig Harbor just barely edged out Olympic for the overall team title at the 2019 Olympic Swimvitational held Jan. 12 at the Olympic Aquatic Center.

The two teams were tied at 47 points heading into the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Gig Harbor’s Andrew Sexton and London Coats initially gave the Tides a slightly comfortable lead, but Tiernann Shelton and Dietrich Meyer nearly closed the gap. Gig Harbor finished with a time of 3:20.62 to give them the eight points needed to take the trophy. The Trojans relay team finished just half a second behind in 3:21.20.

Central Kitsap’s James Sanchez won the Swimmer of the Meet award with 239 points. Sanchez won the 200-yard individual medley in a state-qualifying time of 1:58.87 and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly. He and his teammates also took second in the 200-yard medley relay and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Fellow Cougar Robert Thomasberg finished second among individual swimmers with 216 power points. Thomasberg placed second and third in the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay alongside Sanchez. He also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle race and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Olympic’s Haakon Meyer was just behind with 208 points. He won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.81 and took fifth in the 100-yard butterfly. He and his teammates Rainer Meyer, Ryan Burchell and Ross Burchell took first in the 200-yard medley relay. All three Meyer brothers and Tiernann Shelton took third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Dietrich and Rainer Meyer also each won an individual race for Olympic. Dietrich swam a state-qualifying 49.56 in the 100-yard freestyle and Rainer took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.97, also a 2A state meet time.
