Two North Kitsap School District buses collided when one bus rear-ended the other along a stretch of road between Suquamish and Kingston.

The collision occurred along Miller Bay Road NE, just to the north of Indianola Road NE, said Kitsap County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Wilson.

“[The buses] were trailing eachother, heading northbound on Miller Bay, coming in the opposite direction was an emergency vehicle from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue — it was running code with lights and sirens … [The lead bus driver] did what they’re supposed to do, they slowed and stopped.”

The second bus, Wilson said, carrying three elementary school students appears to have been distracted by the passing vehicle.

“The driver of [the second bus] probably, we’re guessing, was distracted by the approaching emergency vehicle and didn’t realize that the bus in front had slowed and stopped, and rear-ended it.”

Wilson said no serious injuries had been reported.

“The kids got minor injuries from being knocked against the seat in front of them, but they were not transported.” he said.

Shortly after the incident, the North Kitsap School District put out a statement via Facebook responding to the incident.

When asked if either of the drivers appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Wilson said the investigating traffic deputy did not observe any indications of intoxication. When the deputy offered to administer a blood alcohol breath test, Wilson said an on-scene school district supervisor declined, stating that a blood or breath test was only required if a driver had been issued a citation.

“No citation was issued because this was kind of an in-house thing, both buses belong to the same organization, we just documented it and they can deal with the insurance company as they see fit,” Wilson said.

The northbound lane of Miller Bay Road NE was closed from the time of the accident, just before 5 p.m., until shortly after 7:30 p.m.
