PORT ORCHARD — Forty-one Washington State Patrol troopers — including five from Kitsap County — were sworn in late last month in Olympia by Associate Chief Justice Charles W. Johnson of the Washington State Supreme Court.

The graduating cadets completed more than 1,000 hours of training at the Washington State Patrol Academy. Approximately three cadet classes graduate each biennium from the academy, which accounts for about 100 to 120 new troopers. According to WSP officials, only about 4 to 6 percent of the total number of applicants make the grade to become troopers.

Three cadets graduating are from Port Orchard: Loren R. Bonner, who has been assigned to District 6 Ellensburg; Tyler S. Hammrich, District 2 Bellevue; and Rachel M. Kemp, District 8 Port Townsend. Gabriel J. Krebs of Poulsbo has been assigned to District 8 Hoquiam and Gregory M. Alcock of Silverdale is now attached to District 3 Grandview.

“The 41 cadets graduating today endured a rigorous application process, extensive background investigation and received the best training, unmatched anywhere else in the nation,” WSP Chief John Batiste said at the June 26 ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda.

“Today, they will join the ranks of Washington’s finest, as troopers of the Washington State Patrol.”
