A 55-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident at the intersection of Miller Bay Road Northeast and Northeast Wood Bay Road near Suquamish Aug. 17.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies and the Washington State Patrol responded to a call at about 4:45 p.m. Kitsap Fire and Rescue also arrived at the intersection to provide assistance.

Although the investigation into the accident is in its early stages, a preliminary report from KCSO indicated a 2005 Toyota Sequoia was traveling southbound on Miller Bay Road as a Puget Sound Energy (PSE) utility truck was traveling northbound on the road.

From evidence recovered at the scene and the observations of witnesses, the Toyota SUV crossed the centerline and into the path of the oncoming utility truck. The driver of the PSE truck attempted to take evasive action by braking and swerving. The two vehicles collided in the northbound lane.

The driver of the Toyota Sequoia, identified as Kevin Patrick Chandler, was pronounced deceased at the scene by NKFR medics.

According to traffic investigators, Chandler may have suffered a medical event just before the collision. That conclusion is still to be confirmed by the county’s forensic pathologist. It also was found that Chandler was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the PSE utility truck sustained minor injuries and was transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton for further evaluation and treatment.

There is no evidence that the driver of the PSE track was speeding or driving impaired.

The county’s forensic pathologist will conduct an autopsy of Chandler on Monday. When the autopsy is concluded, the Kitsap County Coroner will issue a determination as to the cause and manner of death.

Miller Bay Road was closed to through traffic for more than five hours while traffic deputies and the WSP commercial vehicle inspector conducted their investigations.
