PORT ORCHARD — The swimming beach at Long Lake County Park has been temporarily closed due to high levels of E. coli bacteria in the water, according to the Kitsap Public Health District.

The agency said it will continue to monitor the beach and reopen it when E. coli levels return to safe perimeters considered safe for human contact.

Since there is an increased risk of getting sick, the public has been advised by the health district to avoid all contact with the water at Long Lake’s swimming beach until further notice. That includes no swimming, wading or other types of water play where water could be swallowed or be ingested into the mouth, nose or eyes.

The agency said the risk of illness is greatest for young children, the elderly or anyone with a compromised immune system.

No illnesses have been reported to Kitsap Public Health, according to the agency.

During the summer, the health district monitors 34 fresh and salt-water swimming areas for bacteria levels and sources, safety concerns and toxic cyanobacteria, commonly known as toxic blue-green algae. If people or pets become sick after being in the water, or if you see an algae bloom or large numbers of dead fish, the health district asked that it be reported by calling 360-728-2235 so officials can investigate and take action, if necessary.
