The Silverdale Safeway recently donated $5,000 to the Silverdale Rotary Club to help fight hunger in Kitsap County.

Simone Appleton, Silverdale Safeway Store Director, presented Christie Sheffer, Silverdale Rotary President, with a giant check for $5,000 as part of the grand re-opening ceremony for the Safeway store. Local youths from Silverdale Rotary’s Kids of Action Program along with Safeway staff and members of the public gathered for the ceremony Friday, Aug. 23.

“Today is a special day to recognize people in our community who are selfless and do things for others,” Appleton said.

“For a number of years now, Safeway has been a really important partner, with us, in meeting needs,” Sheffer said. “We work with the homeless liaisons in elementary, middle and high schools to identify kids that are at risk and are homeless.”

“Each year we try to pack bags…with extra meals that they can take home on their longer breaks (from school),” Sheffer went on to say. “Every single time, Safeway has come through and presented us with bags that we needed. The Silverdale Rotary Club is very proud to be in partnership with Safeway, knowing that we’re working together to feed children and address hunger in this community. Thank you so much.”
