The man who stole a truck at knifepoint and crashed into a utility pole at Naval Base Kitsap in March was recently sentenced to 34 months in prison by Kitsap County Superior Court.

Joshua J. Johannessen, who had his daughter with him during the incident, stole a 2007 Ford Ranger at knifepoint around 11:42 a.m. that day. The victim, Isana Solis, had been pumping gas on Wheaton Way when Johannessen asked if Solis could give a ride to him and his daughter.

Things took a violent turn in the vehicle when Johannessen allegedly attacked the victim with a knife while his daughter pleaded “no,” the victim said. The victim was uninjured, according to police, but her jacket had holes in it from the attack.

About an hour-and-a-half later, video taken at the entrance of Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor showed the Ford Ranger crumpled and smoking after an apparent collision with a utility pole outside the base. The video shows Johannessen tumbling out of the truck along with his daughter.

Police responded with their weapons drawn before exchanging words with Johannessen. At one point he mentioned a bomb, which caused police to quickly back up and take cover. Police later confirmed there was no bomb.
