Agency giving $350 for eligible recycled wood stoves

Some restrictions apply to receive Puget Sound Clean Air Agency reward

PORT ORCHARD — Kitsap County residents who own an old, polluting wood stove or fireplace insert may be able to get $350 from the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency if they recycle it.

There are some qualifiers, however: The stove or insert must have been manufactured before 2000 or were not EPA-certified. Built-in zero-clearance fireplaces are not eligible for the recycling refund. But free-standing manufactured fireplaces, wood-burning furnaces and residential coal-burning devices ARE eligible, according to the regional agency.

Old, uncertified wood stoves and inserts are particularly polluting and inefficient. They are no longer legal to sell, purchase, give away or re-install anywhere in Washington state due to the significant pollution they generate, the agency said in a news release.

According to Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, the old device must be in working order but can be installed or uninstalled for the recycling award. The homeowner is responsible for removal and taking the old stove or insert to one of the recycling facilities in Kitsap County.

Wood smoke that includes unhealthy fine particles poses a risk to everyone, especially so to children, older adults and people with heart disease, asthma and other lung diseases.
