SATURDAY

POULSBO GARDEN CLUB: The Poulsbo Garden Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 10, at the Poulsbo Library meeting room. Kay Kauffman of Arranger’s Guild will present a program of Ikebana and other flower arranging techniques.

MEET THE AUTHOR: The Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport will welcome author Lorraine McConaghy at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10 in the auditorium. McConaghy will discuss her book “Warship Under Sail,” which recounts the USS Decatur’s exploits during voyages in the Pacific, including the Battle of Seattle. The museum store will have the book available, and following the presentation, McConaghy will sign copies and chat with attendees.

BUCK LAKE/HANSVILLE GREENWAY HIKE: This is an easy walk of about six miles on April 11 through the heart of the Hansville Greenway, an open space preserve that eventually will extend from Puget Sound to the Hood Canal. The Great Peninsula Conservancy is sponsoring the hike. Info: www.greatpeninsula.org.

KITSAP CHADD: Kitsap CHADD, the local Attention Deficit Disorder support group , will host “AD/HD & Meds: What is There? What’s New? What Works for What?” presented by Terry Douglass, ARNP, Ph.D., at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 13. There is no charge and no pre-sign-up needed. BARK FOR LIFE: The American Cancer Society Bark For Life is a Relay For Life fundraising event that honors the caregiving qualities of canine companions. RED CROSS BENEFIT: The Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3586, located at 4230 Lincoln Hill Road, and the Buz Whiteley Big Band present an evening of music and dancing from 7:30-11 p.m. on Saturday, April 24. There will be no admission charged but a donation would be appreciated; all proceeds go to the Red Cross for the benefit of the Haitian people who have been devastated by the recent earthquake. FIGHT AGAINST MALARIA: The Ivory Coast Medical Relief Team will be at a table at Central Market in Poulsbo to talk to people and get donations for mosquito nets in the fight against malaria form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, which is International Malaria Awareness Day. HOOKED ON FISHING: The Poulsbo Noon Lions Club and North Kitsap Future Farmers of America will host a Hooked on Fish Derby for children 11 and younger, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the horticulture pond behind Poulsbo Junior High. The event is free and bait is provided. Fishing poles are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so if children have poles, please bring them along. The pond will be stocked with about 500 rainbow trout. Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in each age category. Parents are encouraged to help, but not fish. This is a fun-filled family activity that can help children develop a lifelong passion for fishing. Complimentary fish cleaning will be provided by NKFFA.

SEEKING DOCENTS: The Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport is currently recruiting for the Youth Docent Volunteer Program. The program offers young people work experience in a museum. Volunteers work five hours a day three days a week during the busy summer months as well as a few hours monthly during the winter months. Work begins as soon as school is out in the spring. Teens must be between the ages of 13-17 to participate. Youth Docents serve as educational aides and curatorial assistants. They will research, design and build an exhibit. Students will also design, build and test an underwater remotely operated vehicle. Volunteers are accepted on a first come basis. LIVING WITH ILLNESS, LOSS, AND DEATH: Explore and transform the difficulties and disappointments that come with disease and loss. This is an open and ongoing support group led by retired hospice nurse Cathy Cuenin. SEEKING VOLUNTEERS: The Nature Conservancy is looking for volunteer stewards to help monitor Foulweather Bluff preserve, a nature preserve in northern Kitsap County near Hansville. Our stewards visit the preserve during busy summer months and keep us informed of activities there. Shifts are two hours, twice per month. COMMUNITY GARDEN SPOTS: There are three large and 11 small plots available at the Community Garden (P-Patch) at Raab Park in Poulsbo. Large plots (10×20) rent for $45, small ones (10×10) are $35. Poulsbo residents receive a $5 discount. Water, some tools and compost are provided. Gardeners commit to working six hours per season in the common areas. Info: (360) 779-9898.

CHILDREN OF THE NATIONS: Henery’s Hardware in Kingston is accepting donation checks for Children of the Nations and Hansville Community Church through March 26. Contributions of $6 will purchase a 12 x 10 tarp and weather resistant rope to make a temporary shelter for families in Haiti. Checks should be made out to “COTN.”
