AUBURN — The North Kitsap gymnastics team had a night to remember on Saturday, beating nine other teams from the Olympic League, South Sound Conference and Pierce County League to capture the subregional championship.
The Vikings finished with a final team score of 154.38, just ahead of Timberline (149) and Bonney Lake (143). North Kitsap and Timberline both advance as a team to the West Central District 2A/3A championships on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Kentlake High School. Kingston finished sixth with 102 points.
Grace Billings won the balance beam competition with an 8.45 and also finished second in the vault with an 8.2. She also tied for sixth in the floor exercise with an 8.55. Billings and Junko Ketch tied for sixth in the all around, each finishing with 31.225 points, while Kelsey Derr placed eighth with 31.200.
Anna Quinn was Kingston’s top finisher in the all around with a total score of 24.425.
Ketch placed in the top eight in three events. She finished fourth in the floor exercise (8.825), seventh on the balance beam (8.025) and eighth in the uneven bars (6.726).
North Kitsap also had several other top eight finishes. Alivia Palmer finished fourth in the vault and Sienna Taylor took sixth; Jordyn Lovett scored a 7.225 in the bars to take fourth while Derr’s 6.95 put her in sixth; while Kelli Stevens scored an 8.3 in the balance beam to take fifth. Palmer and Derr also tied for eighth in the floor exercise, each getting an 8.5.
Klahowya finishes third in 1A/2A state bowling tournament, South Kitsap gets seventh
After finishing in first in both the league and district tournaments, the Klahowya Eagles had a final strong showing at the 1A/2A state tournament at Narrows Bowl Plaza in Tacoma.
The Eagles finished third with 6,957 pins behind only W.F. West (7,355) and Columbia River (7,281).
Klahowya racked up a pair of 800 games during the six full games and then was able to roll consistently in the 14 baker games. Klahowya was in second or third for most of the way during the tournament.
Hailey Johnson was the top individual for the Eagles, finishing 11th with 1,007 pins. Hannah Catt, Jacklynne Stroup and Lucille Mitchell finished 17th, 18th and 19th respectively with 947, 944 and 943 pins. Faith Chamness rounded out the top five with 906 pins.
Meaghan Malone finished 23rd as Bremerton’s lone individual at state with 930 pins. Rebecca Converse of Olympic finished 29th with 904 pins.
South Kitsap took seventh in a very tight 4A tournament. Less than 100 pins separated fourth-place Cascade with the Wolves, who were able to finish ahead of the 4A District III champion, Decatur.
Annabelle McElhaney was the top bowler for South Kitsap. She finished 19th with 971 pins. Abigail Rogers was 28th with 936 pins and freshman Ariana Conrad knocked down 902 pins during her six games.
