BREMERTON — Mere days after leading one of the greatest comebacks in state tournament history, North Kitsap’s Shaa Humphrey, Logan Chmielewski, Kendall Miller and Kobe McMillian nearly authored another one — albeit in a slightly different setting.
The quartet of Vikings took the court as part of Team Cascade in the 18th West Sound Senior All-Star Game and found themselves trailing by 24 points. Humphrey hit seven threes in the second half to lead all players with 26 points, but Team Puget Sound prevailed 90-83.
“It was kind of like the NBA All-Star game,” said McMillian, who finished the exhibition with 21 points. “I was thinking we were going to come back like we did against Lynden.”
Chmielewski opened the game with a pair of 3-pointers to give Team Cascade a 6-0 lead, but Team Puget Sound was the more determined squad in the first half.
South Kitsap forward Gavin Morkert turned up the heat early with several highlight-reel dunks. Eli Mackie, a fellow Wolf, and Central Kitsap guard Colby White kept him busy with plenty of great passes to allow the big man to show off his leaping ability.
Morkert led Puget Sound with 18 points. Kyler Kelso added 17 and White chipped in 14.
Many of the players have played together and against one another at the AAU level, making the All-Star game a proper sendoff for the area’s top players.
“It was nice to play with all of our AAU buddies,” Humphrey said.
Klahowya’s Matthew Hytinen won the hot shot contest, defeating fellow Eagle Nick Lewis, 16-9, in the final round. Olympic’s Tyler Lindal bested Port Townsend’s Noa Montoya in the 3-point shooting contest, 12-11.
In the girls game, Team Puget Sound also prevailed 41-37 led by North Kitsap’s Noelani Barreith and Grace Johnson, who had 11 and nine points respectively. North Mason’s Sophie Green led Team Cascade with 14 points.
Olympic’s Kaylan Riley knocked down six 3-pointers in the final round to defeat Kingston’s Leetsah Deam. Kirstin Griffey of North Mason won the hot shot contest.
