No surprise: no city cleanup this fall

COVID-19, limited city staff necessitates cancellation

PORT ORCHARD — It’s no surprise that the global pandemic that COVID-19 wrought has canceled yet another civic event close to home: the City of Port Orchard Fall Cleanup event.

“After careful consideration and reviewing the Governor’s ‘Safe Start’ plan, the City has made the decision to cancel this year’s Fall Clean-Up,” city officials stated in a Sept. 15 news release.

The annual event is organized by the city’s public works department in association with the contracted disposal company Waste Management. It coincides with a spring cleanup event and typically takes place at the end of September or the start of October within the boundaries of the city.

“We understand the Fall Clean-up is a great opportunity for our residents to have their household refuse and items disposed of, but with City staff working in a limited capacity, and making sure we keep our citizens and staff safe and healthy, we will not be able to hold this event,” the city’s news release stated.

No date has been announced for either a makeup date or the spring cleanup event.
