WSP hosts free hazardous materials disposal

Event set for Saturday, Oct. 17 in Bremerton

PORT ORCHARD — Residents who have hazardous materials in their possession can dispose of them at a no-fee disposal event hosted in Kitsap County by the Washington State Patrol.

In a news release distributed Sept. 30, WSP officials said they receive several calls each week from individuals seeking to dispose of miscellaneous hazardous materials such as ammunition and fireworks with limited resources on a case by case basis. In response to those requests, WSP has scheduled six hours on Saturday, Oct. 17 to accept those materials at its district headquarters in Bremerton.

The no-fee hazardous materials disposal event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4811 W. Werner Way in Bremerton.

Items accepted include ammunition, expired and/or damaged marine flares, expired and/or damaged road flares, consumer-grade fireworks and reloading powders. Items NOT accepted at the disposal event include homemade bombs of any kind, homemade pipe bombs, sparkler bombs and military ordinance items of any kind. Household chemicals and paints are not among the accepted items, Trooper Jessica E. Schob said in the release.

Those in possession of such items are directed to call 911.
