Wind gusts create havoc with power outages in South Kitsap

Port Orchard has more than 18,000 customers without power, PSE says

PORT ORCHARD — Wind gusts up to 45 miles an hour blew through South Kitsap Tuesday afternoon, causing power outages to pop up on Puget Sound Energy’s online outage chart.

Areas taking the full brunt of the wind gusts included Port Orchard, where 18, 341 PSE customers were left without power as of 4:30 p.m. Other areas in the county, including Bremerton, Gorst, Silverdale and Bainbridge Island, reported scattered outages, according to PSE.

The National Weather Service indicated that a wind advisory will be in effect until 6 p.m., although conditions had died down in South Kitsap by around 4:15 p.m.

The winds followed a night and morning of sometimes heavy rain. The outages were mostly as a result of toppled trees and broken branches landing on power lines, PSE said today.

Some afternoon Bremerton fast ferry sailings have been canceled out of Seattle and Bremerton, Kitsap Transit reported Tuesday.

The Seattle metropolitan area also is dealing with scattered power outages this afternoon.
