SKSD’s Highly Capable Services to accept referrals

All students are eligible for referral, according to the district

PORT ORCHARD — South Kitsap School District’s Highly Capable Services program will soon be accepting referrals for students, a district official said Monday.

“Our goal is to provide a learning environment where every highly capable student is provided multiple opportunities to challenge their intellectual, social and emotional growth,” said Amy Miller, South Kitsap’s communication and public information officer.

Miller said students in all grades who are enrolled in South Kitsap School District are eligible for referral. All second and fifth graders will be administered the first phase of testing, so a separate referral form will not be required.

“Our referral process will remain the same for the 2020-21 school year, but we are working on a testing and identification plan that will work with COVID restrictions,” she added.

The deadline for accepting referrals is Jan. 15. Testing conducted during the 2020-21 school year is for services starting in fall 2021. Referral forms are completed in Skyward Family Access and will be available starting Dec. 1.

If parents would like to refer a student or would like more information about the program, they can visit the school district’s website at skschools.org. The program is listed on the website as “Highly Capable Services” on the “Student Center” page. Those interested in the program also can call Highly Capable Services at 360-874-7057.
