The North Kitsap Schools Foundation has awarded over $13,000 to North Kitsap School District schools and teachers.

The foundation funded six grant requests for the 2020-21 school year. The grants ranged from $200 to $5,000 to support students and teachers with an emphasis on requests that sparked innovation and inspiration.

This year’s grant cycle also included the first request from a student. Carmella Basco of North Kitsap High School wrote a grant to purchase books and materials for school’s Equity Club.

“The NKHS Equity Club wants to promote inclusion and diversity, and not only promote, but we also want to show that we care and put action behind our words,” Basco said.

Basco and the Equity Club received a little over $800 to help with discussions and actions to make NKHS a more equitable place.

Other grants included:

*$5,000 for NKSD elementary schools to purchase audiobooks

*$4,861 for alternative communication options for non-verbal students

*$1,400 for STEM Family Nights at Pearson Elementary

*$942 for flexible seating options at Gordon Elementary

*$190 for materials for the Special Education Department.

The foundation has partnerships all over North Kitsap and works to “fill in the gaps” that state and federal funds don’t reach for schools and education. Since 2003 the foundation has awarded over $445,000 in grants to NK schools.
