Two Port Orchard police officers were injured early Saturday in a fight with a suspect who broke free and ran to a neighboring house, where the homeowner shot the man in the stomach after he forced his way inside.

According to Chief Al Townsend, the officers responded about 1:15 a.m. to a 9-1-1 hangup call from a residence on Melcher Street between Tacoma and Portland avenues. They encountered a 47-year-old male leaving the house, and when they contacted him the man assaulted one of the officers.

During the struggle the suspect was tasered by the second officer, but he broke free during the fight. The suspect then assaulted the second officer and fought for the first officer’s taser, ultimately tasering the officer briefly.

The subject again broke free and ran to the neighboring house, where he made forcible entry into the home. As the officers approached the house they heard a struggle followed by a gunshot. The homeowner was confronted by the suspect and  fired a shot that struck the man in the abdomen.

The officers involved in the struggle received minor injuries and are expected to remain off work for one to three days, Townsend said.

The suspect was transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Tacoma, where he underwent surgery and was reported in stable condition later Saturday. Townsend said he had not yet been arrested.

The homeowner who shot the suspect was interviewed by detectives and released.

The investigation of this incident is ongoing and will be led by the Washington State Patrol with assistance from the Bremerton Police Department and Port Orchard Police Department. The Kitsap County Sheriff’s office also assisted in the original call for assistance by the Port Orchard officers.
