PORT ORCHARD — Only three elective positions failed to draw candidates during the week-long filing period overseen by the Kitsap County Auditor’s Office that ended a week ago Friday.

Candidates failed to file for open positions with the Port of Illahee, Sunnyslope Water District and North Perry Water District.

According to final figures from county auditor Paul Andrews’ office, 129 candidates filed to run for 67 offices. The races drawing more than two candidates will be winnowed down in the Aug. 3 primary election.

The races this election cycle in Kitsap County include battles for city mayor, city council, school boards, port commission, municipal judge and various fire and utility district commissions.

Two election races, in particular, drew a crowded list of office seekers. The Port Orchard City Council’s open seats this fall will feature three incumbents seeking reelection and a crowd of challengers hoping to unseat them.

Veteran council member Bek Ashby is not running for reelection to her Position 2 seat. At-large council member Jay Rosapepe is seeking her seat, however, and will be facing challengers Alex Ayala and Randy Jones.

Four candidates are hoping to replace Rosapepe as the at-large member: Terry Lind, Cody Morgan, Mark Trenary and Shaun Williams.

Fred Chang, who is the Position 6 incumbent, and Scott Diener, the Position 3 incumbent, drew single challengers who they will face in December. Chang will face Kaylan O’Connor and Diener will be opposed by Heidi Fenton.

Two South Kitsap School District members on the board of directors — Rebecca Diehl and Liz Sebren — did not file for reelection this election cycle. In their place, candidates Dave Burk, Mike Eslava, Brian Schroeder, Brian Pickard, Herbert Willett and Lance Yohe have filed for the District 3 seat. The school district board’s other open seat representing District 4 will have three candidates seeking the position: Gregg Anderson, Joe Trent and Jeffrey Wilson.

Gerald Preuss was the sole candidate to file for Position 1 on the South Kitsap Fire and Rescue Board of Commissioners, but four candidates are running for the board’s Position 4 seat: Abiodun Apata, Kyle Joyce, Tyler J. McKlosky and Mike Smith.

Incumbent Cary Bozeman is unopposed for the District 1 commissioner seat on the Bremerton Port Commission.

Former Port Orchard Mayor Lary Coppola will face Christopher R. Binns for Commissioner Position 2 with the Port of Manchester District No. 10. Bob Ballard is unopposed for Position 3.

Jeffrey Acoba and Casey Guthrie are running unopposed for the District 2 and 3 seats, respectively, on the Waterman Port Commission.

The West Sound Utility District No. 1 race for Position 3 features two candidates, Jessie Rude and Susan Way, whose outcome will be decided in November. And three candidates filed to run for Commissioner Position 3 with the Manchester Water District No. 11: Paul Drotz, James E. Strode and Sabina Fiore.
