NK demolishes rival Bainbridge

It was supposed to be the battle of the Titans. It was the battle of the unbeatens.

But only one team played like it as North Kitsap romped past Bainbridge last Friday night 78-35.

The Spartans just could not stop the Vikings in transition. As soon as there was a rebound an NK guard would release and score an uncontested layup.

Bainbridge took its only lead of the game when James Carey hit from the top of the key for a 3-2 advantage. But then the visitors went on a 16-0 run. Sophomore guard Cade Orness led the way with 12 of them after grabbing an offensive rebound, hitting a 3, scoring inside, hitting another 3 and ending the run with a fastbreak layup.

Bainbridge turnovers also played a role in that streak, as did NK’s full-court press and tight man-to-man defense and limiting BI to one shot.

After Braydon Morgan stole the ball and made a layup to end that run Jonas La Tour scored two fastbreak layups as the Vikings led 20-5 after one period.

They expanded that lead to 47-14 by halftime. Mason Chmielewski of NK and Everett Moore traded 3’s to open the second period, but then the Vikings went on another big 13-0 run.

Orness scored on a drive and fastbreak, then made a nifty pass inside to Aiden Olmstead for another bucket. Not only was BI cold from the field, they also missed some foul shots and was called for two offensive charging fouls.

A free throw off a technical foul ended that streak.

Jonas hit a 3, then Olmstead passed inside to Johny Olmsted to increase the margin. Orness assisted on a bucket by Harry Davies to end the half. Caleb Durrance scored on a drive and a 3 for BI’s points.

The second half was just more of the same.
