NK girls sunk by Eagles

North Kitsap’s girls basketball team ran into an offensive and defensive juggernaut Saturday night at Central Valley in Spokane.

The Vikings, seeded 16th, fell to ninth seeded West Valley 66-33, knocking them out of the state playoffs, which take place this week at the SunDome in Yakima.

NK ended its season at 15-7. WV is 21-2.

West Valley jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes and never looked back.

Sophia Baugh, a 5-8 junior guard, finally got NK on the board, then 5-7 sophomore forward Evelyn Beers hit two free throws to make it 9-4. But WV went on an 8-0 run to go up 17-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Senior post Aliyah Henry, 6-0, scored eight points, including two 3’s, to lead the victors that period. NK got going a little bit in the second period, only being outscored 18-13, but still trailed at the half 35-17.

Jade Sunnenberg, a 5-7 junior guard, started NK off with a 3, Baugh and Beers hit buckets and Baugh added four free throws. Ayanna Selembo, a 5-8 senior guard, also scored.

Madison Carr, a 6-0 senior post, led the Eagles with six that quarter. Henry added five.

It was just more of the same in the second half, and actually worse as the Eagles outscored the Vikings 23-8 in the third. Both teams had eight points in the final stanza.

Beers scored, but WV tallied seven straight to extend the lead to 42-19. Baugh hit a bucket and Beers another but it was 58-25 after three periods.

Lani Walker, a 5-8 senior point guard, did most of the damage for the Eagles that quarter with seven points.

WV started off the final quarter with eight-straight points before Baugh hit two free throws and Beers made a 3 to make it 66-30.

Baugh led the Vikings with 18 points. Beers added 6, Sunnenberg and junior guard Anna Wetzsteon 3 each, and Selembo 2. Post Maliyah Reed was held scoreless.

Sophomore guard Chloe DeHaro led the victors with 16, Henry 15, Carr 12 and senior point guard Rylen Palmer and Walker 9 each.
