The next stage of the South Kitsap Industrial Area connector road was one of three projects submitted regionally for consideration for federal funding by the Kitsap Regional Coordinating Council, chaired by Port Orchard Mayor Tim Matthes.

The Kitsap County projects are competing with projects from King, Pierce and Snohomish counties for a share of $66 million in federal money to be announced July 10 by the Puget Sound Regional Council.

The other two projects submitted from the KRCC were the widening of Silverdale Way and eastern end of the Sound to Olympics trail on Bainbridge Island. All three projects are totaling about $11 million in the 2015-2017 funding cycle.

The $2-million second phase of the SKIA connector road — coming off State Highway 3 — would extend it 5,000 feet to Old Clifton Road. The first phase of the SKIA connector road was built in 2010.

Eventually, the 3.5-mile project would wrap around the Bremerton National Airport and intersect with Lake Flora Road and cost about $15 million.
