Joanne Goethals passed away on July 19, 2022, at Fieldstone Assisted Living in Olympia, Washington. She was born August 11, 1935, to Otto and Emily Nestler in Seattle, Washington. She also resided on Bainbridge Island from 1964 to 2021.
Joanne graduated from Seattle’s Franklin High School. She married Albert Goethals on May 16, 1953, in Seattle. In 1964, they moved to Bainbridge Island, where they owned and operated Emerald Construction and Emerald Heights Water.
Raising and showing horses was a lifelong passion for Joanne. The family won numerous state and national awards. She was a member of the Bainbridge Island Saddle Club. Joanne also enjoyed tending to her beautiful garden and her many koi fish.
Joanne is survived by her sons, Rick (Judi) Goethals of Bellevue, Washington, and Robert (Agnes) Goethals of Silverdale, Washington; daughter, Cheryl (Jerry) Messer of Elma, Washington; grandchildren, Michael Goethals, Kyle Goethals and Ashley (Brian) Monk; and great-grandson, Wyatt Monk. She was predeceased by her parents, Otto and Emily Nestler; husband, Albert Goethals; and brother, Ed Nestler.
