Although I don’t live in the boundaries of the proposed Kingston Metropolitan Park District, I support this community effort 110 percent and would vote for it if I could. The Kingston Village Green Park and community center has been a goal for the community for many years. During my time as county commissioner, the county worked with Kingston leaders to make sure the land would be available to create a central park for residents of all ages to enjoy.

When we finally acquired the old Navy Housing to complete the park, we knew that a community center was the next dream. Unfortunately, money for construction can be raised through grants and donations, but sustained funding for ongoing operations and maintenance can only come from local sources.

Kitsap County, like most local governments around the country, is striving to provide just the basic public services; and while parks are a vital part of a quality community, public safety comes first. The county simply cannot afford to take on new operation and maintenance obligations.

The Metropolitan Park District, at less than $50 a year per household, is the best way for Kingston to have a community gathering place for the library, for our kids, seniors, and families. It’s never a good time to ask people for more, but less than $4.16 per month, you won’t receive a better value. Please vote yes for a quality community gem.
