On Sunday, October 2, Darla Denise Gibbons, beloved wife and mother, passed away. She was sixty-six years old. Born to Kenneth and Elizabeth Recknagle, Denise, as she was known, grew up in Port Orchard, Washington, one of seven children. A talented singer, she performed in the jazz choir in high school and studied music at Central Washington College (now Central Washington University).
Denise married her high school best friend, then sweetheart, Steven Gibbons, and they had four children, Heather, Garrett, Morgan and John. They were married for 44 years. After living in Utah and Washington, D.C., Denise and Steve returned to Washington State to settle down and raise their children on Bainbridge Island. Throughout her adult life, Denise was active in the LDS church community, serving as a dedicated and inspirational leader, teacher, choir director, volunteer and supportive friend to many. She was a devoted mother and wife, and enjoyed spending time with her family camping, hiking, sailing and kayaking.
Denise was also remarkably creative, adventurous and practical. She remodeled a house, sailed boats and climbed mountains. In addition to her musical talent, she was a skilled seamstress, quilter and gardener with a keen eye for color and design. All who knew her remember her joyful laugh, warmth, intelligence and deep faith. She is survived by her husband, four children and five grandchildren.
