Jerry (Deac) Winslow, 87, of Port Orchard, WA, passed away on September 26, 2022. Born on October 7, 1934 in Tacoma, WA to Conde and Lulu (Helgeson) Winslow.
Jerry moved to Port Orchard attending Elementary to South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard. He served with honor in the US Army as a Pvt 1st Class from June 24, 1953 to May 23, 1955, and received the Army Occupation Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was stationed in Germany, and while there taught mountaineering in Austria, and was a champion military divisional boxer.
He married Loma Lou Skinner on November 6,1953 in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. Jerry was owner and operator of Winslow’s Masonry Construction and Heritage Fireplace Shops from 1959 until retiring in 1989 after 30 years. His son Bret now owns Winslow’s Masonry and his grandson Shaun Winslow now owns the Heritage Fireplace Shops. Jerry was a past president of the Northwest Hearth, Patio & BBQ association (HPBA), where he was instrumental in working with Governor Booth Gardner in putting through legislation regarding emission standards in 1988.
Horses were part of Deac’s whole life. He held a membership in the United States Team Roping Association (USTRC), in both the Northwest and Arizona, and qualified twice for the USTRC National Finals. He also traveled the rodeo circuit, competing in calf roping. Jerry was a member of Port Orchard Yacht Club and built a brick outdoor barbecue there that is in use today.
Upon retirement he took his boat to Alaska for 6 weeks and would fly in family and friends to fish. He took great pride in having the prettiest vegetable garden, with an abundance he shared with family. He was creative in his woodworking, a karaoke singer, a project builder, part of the men’s prayer group at Harper Church, and he played the harmonica.
He spent many hours in the family pool, playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jerry and Loma traveled extensively, visiting New Zealand, Fifi, England, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Canada & Mexico. They visited most states and cities including, New York, Boston, and Washington DC. Jerry loved sports and competition of all kinds. He loved a challenge and passed that on to his children. Jerry encouraged and supported his children as they competed in organized sports including rodeo events, baseball and wrestling. Jerry became an avid fan of wrestling when his sons took up the sport in junior high. He attended most practices, every match and all tournaments.
Deac is preceded in death by his parents; son, Dean Grant Winslow; and granddaughter, Amanda Winslow. Deac’s memory will live on with his sons, Bret Alan Winslow (Dawn) and Wade Elwood Winslow (Theresa); daughters, Rhonda Rae Edwards (Steve), Joni Kae Wilson (Marc), and Dee Ann Wilson (Mark); 24 grandchildren: Rachel Edwards, Cody Edwards, Clint Edwards, Evan Winslow, Emily Winslow, Brady Winslow, Jerry Wilson, Mitchell Wilson, Amy Wilson, Clare Springer, Jayne Westman, Laura Ohman, Brandy Harrison, Justin Winslow, Shaun Winslow, Christian Winslow, Tarra Winslow, Grace Winslow, Caleb Winslow, Joshua Winslow, Daniel Winslow, Lilly Winslow & Abagail Winslow; 37 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bremerton, WA, on October 7th at 10:30am.
A celebration of life was held at Harper Evangelical Church in Port Orchard, WA on October 7, 2022.
