If you were fortunate enough, back in March 2006, to see The Acting Company’s touring production of “The Three Musketeers” at the Admiral Theatre in Bremerton, but are on the fence about the prestigious New York troupe’s March 12 return because it might be “same ol’, same ol’,” know one thing: It’s not the same.

Except for the title, this is a whole ‘nother “Three Musketeers.”

“We’re quite excited by the differences,” Acting Company artistic director Kent Gash said of the world premiere adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas classic.

“This adaptation is examining ‘The Three Musketeers’ in a way that it is seldom considered,” Gash said. “It’s from a black imagination.”

There’s still “swashbuckling, humor and intrigue,” but 17 years and one day since the 2006 performance the Acting Company will dress this new adaptation in new costumes, a new set and technical updates to reflect its point of view.

One thing hasn’t changed since 2006 is a grueling bus-and-trailer affair — the company often arrives in the afternoon with a run-through prior to the actual show.

“There’s a lot going on,” Gash understated. “There are technicians, wardrobe people and sound and lighting support. It’s very complex backstage, with people playing many parts, costume changes, weaponry changes … there’s a whole other show going on backstage.”

Gash said the company’s committed to delivering world-class theater to communities that might not otherwise have access.

“We love to have people who already love theater,” he said, “but it’s even more exciting when young audiences, and those who might never have seen classic theater before, because they’ve felt it has nothing to do with them, or because of the isolation of their community. For them to see our work and have it quicken their pulse in any way, that’s us doing our job.”
