A system used to pump oily bilge water from U.S. Navy vessels is thought to be the cause of a spill, the sheen of which was visible from Bangor to the Hood Canal Bridge. An estimated 2,000 gallons of bilge water spilled into the waters off Naval Base Kitsap — Bangor in the afternoon of Feb. 11, a Navy spokesman said.

After spending days in Harborview Medical Center’s intensive care unit, Allan Wodenscheck was in satisfactory condition and moved onto a different floor. Wodenscheck, 24, was airlifted to Harborview Dec. 16 after a head-on collision with a suspected drunken driver near the entrance of Agate Pass Bridge in Suquamish. Wodenscheck had a broken leg, shattered femur, broken ankle, and broken collar bone.

The Port of Kingston may have grounded its own project when it improperly identified where a proposed maintenance dredge would take place. “The original documents the port provided to the permitting agencies, which [the Department of Natural Resources] reviewed, indicated that the dredging operation would only take place on port-owned property,” Aquatics Program Communications Manager Toni Droscher wrote in an email.
