Naval Base Kitsap to conduct exercise

Naval Base Kitsap will be conducting security exercises today. The purpose of the exercises is to allow personnel to share and develop security procedures to ensure the safety and security of U.S. military resources.

Exercises drills such as these are conducted in realistic environments under realistic circumstances to ensure our forces maintain the highest levels of proficiency and readiness.  Tenant commands and local residents may see and hear exercise activity, which will include the use of blank ammunition, noise producing simulators, and smoke.  Live ammunition will not be used.  Exercise operations will not inconvenience local residents.

Silverdale Chamber of Commerce announces 2011 Accolades Nominees

The Silverdale Chamber of Commerce annually recognizes individuals and businesses for their outstanding contributions to the community.  The Accolades are presented at the Chamber’s annual gala to be held on October 22 at Kitsap Golf and Country Club during an evening of celebration of the Silverdale community.  Community members are encouraged to vote for the nominees they feel best represent the spirit of the award they are have been nominated for.

2011 Accolade Nominees are:

Business of the Year Sponsored by Oxford Inn and Suites. The nominees for this award are businesses which have through financial and in-kind resources made a significant impact on the Silverdale Community’s economic and social well being.  This year’s nominees are Hales Ale House, Bella Bella Cupcakes and Silverdale Cyclery.

Citizen of the Year Sponsored by Network Home Loans.  The nominees for this award are individuals who have made a significant contribution through time, energy and talent towards developing a sense of community in Silverdale. The 2011 Nominee are Mary Earl – active community member and Jo Clark – the executive Director of Stand Up For Kids (Local Chapter) and John Emery – Volunteer cook for the Benedict House meals (shelter for homeless men).

Earl most recently, spearheaded the restoration of the Welcome to Silverdale Sign. She is active member of Clear Creek Task Force and Co-Chair of  Silverdale Old Town Artwalk.

Clark’s mission is to end the cycle of youth homelessness. Stand Up For Kids works through volunteers who go to the streets in order to find and help homeless and street kids improve their lives.

Emery also cooks for various pancake breakfasts, etc to raise money for student scholarships. He is Central Kitsap’s Cross Country coach and volunteers to conduct the Summer Conditioning program for all students wishing to improve their running skills. John tirelessly promotes physical fitness in the community.

Paul G Linder Service Award for Chamber Member of the Year Sponsored by Clearwater Casino and Resort.  This award recognizes a chamber member who has significant record of service and diligence to the chamber and has given of their time talent and resources. The outstanding nominees are Lisa Jewett  of Gravity Payments, Tricia Reece of Geico Insurance and Bud Aiken of Minuteman Press.

Pioneer of the Year Award  sponsored by the Central Kitsap Reporter. This Accolade recognizes a business which has served the Silverdale Community for more than  twenty years. This year’s winner is Stedman Bee Supplies.  The Stedman family has operated their bee supplies business for more than thirty five years from their Anderson Hill Location.

Peninsula tourism summit

Port Angeles, Wash. The 2011 Tourism Summit , Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, at The Commons, Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, is sponsored by Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission (OPTC).

Alchemy Bistro & Wine Bar and Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will welcome Tourism Summit attendees, vendors and speakers, and Jefferson County Chamber members and business owners to a reception at Alchemy Bistro, 842 Washington Street, on Tuesday, October 18, from 6-8 pm.
