More than 40 brand new homes will be going up in Bremerton and potential buyers will be pleased to hear the development is eco-friendly.

Those involved in the development and supporters celebrated the creation of the Meadows at Sylvan Friday, Feb. 27 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Meadows at Sylvan is located at the west end of Sylvan Way in Bremerton and is a built-green plat that will offer new homes from the mid-$260,000 price range.

David D. Wideman, of Big Sky Builders in Silverdale, said the development sits on 11.48 acres and will have 22 single-family homes and 22 townhouses.

Wideman said they didn’t plan to build a green development, but that’s the direction things went.

When Big Sky Builders cut down trees to make room for the development, they sent the wood to places where it was burned for energy. Wideman said they also used recycled concrete where they could on the development.

Big Sky Builders also used pervious asphalt where applicable at the Meadows at Sylvan. Pervious asphalt allows runoff and rain water to filter into the ground before entering the stormwater management system. Wideman said he’s been told the Meadows at Sylvan is the first development in the state to use pervious asphalt.

“The Meadows at Sylvan is built as green as we could make it,” he said.

Wideman said the Meadows at Sylvan also has a lot of open space and Big Sky Builders plans to keep it that way.

“All the nature that’s around it will stay there forever,” he said. “You absolutely have to see it to appreciate it.”

Big Sky Builders should have approval from Bremerton City Council in April to keep moving forward with the development.
