POULSBO —  A local business is stepping up to support The Coffee Oasis by nominating it for a unique grant.

Poulsbo’s Dahlquist’s Fine Jewelry has nominated The Coffee Oasis for a grant that could equal $10,000.

“It’s really exciting,” said Erica Steele, Community Resource Coordinator for The Coffee Oasis.

The Jewelers for Children Local Grant Program began in 1999 from within the nation’s jewelry industry. The purpose is to support children in need. It has donated approximately $43 million to children’s programs, so far.

This year, the non-profit has $100,000 to distribute and aims to support 10 separate children’s causes. The Coffee Oasis is up for one such grant, and is the only one from Washington, Steele said. A total of 30 non-profits were eligible.

“We really have a chance,” Steele said.

If the Poulsbo non-profit receives a grant, Steele said the money would be put into case management, hiring another employee.

The Coffee Oasis opened up an extension of its barista-based youth refuges in Poulsbo last year. It offers more than coffee. It offers a place for local youth to step into, and off the streets.

But it is not so easy. In order to obtain the funds, the coffee shop needs votes.

Supporters can visit the Jewelers for Children Facebook page and vote for a range of good causes. The organizations that receive the most votes, earn a grant.

“We were pleased to hear about the program,” said Richard Koven of Dahlquist Fine Jewelry. “It was such an easy way to help support the excellent work The Coffee Oasis does locally to improve the quality of life for the less fortunate youth of our community. Now, we’re trying to get the word out to the public to vote so The Coffee Oasis receives one of these generous grants.”

“Pulling together, we can help provide some much needed funding for The Coffee Oasis,” Koven said. “One minute of your time, one vote, $10,000. What could be easier.”

The Coffee Oasis is a faith-based, nonprofit that operates a coffee house while also engaging at-risk youth with programs to help them become productive citizens.

The last day to vote is Oct. 30.
