POULSBO — A Sonic Drive-In has been expected in Poulsbo ever since its construction was announced in March 2014. But progress on the new fast-food restaurant was stalled as the city’s permitting process continued and changes were made in the construction plan.
“Two things have slowed the project so far. The stormwater detention system changed which slowed the process,” said Richard Ramsey, franchise owner of the Poulsbo Sonic. “And just permitting — getting the building plans approved through the city.
“The site work is essentially completed. We’re waiting for the city to issue our building permits. When we get that we can start putting in our foundation.”
Ramsey expects to receive building permits within the month. He said construction of the Sonic could be completed as soon as June.
“It will be a traditional Sonic Drive-In,” Ramsey said. “We will have the car hops and everything. It will look, act and behave like a Sonic, a fun nostalgic drive-in.
“We will have 16 car hop stalls and a double drive-thru and additional parking. The non-traditional part of the building is that we will have indoor seating, which most Sonics don’t have. It will have indoor seating with rolled-up doors that we can open on nice days.”
The Sonic is being constructed on the northeast corner of Highway 305 and Viking Avenue. It will be 2,148 square feet with 690 square feet dedicated to inside seating.
