I want to express my appreciation for your Dec. 13 editorial (“We need to have each other’s backs,” page A6). In my own opinion, humanity has always been a test of relationships, with the common good being ever so important. I attend St. Olaf’s Parish, so am well familiar with the St. Vincent de Paul folks at work there.

I am going to forward, separately, in the mail going out today, a modest contribution to the Poulsbo Lions/Raab Foundation Bellringer Fund. My “Christmas Fund” is built up all year by setting aside some of my fixed income. Happily, as I look at the fund this year, I see an opening to permit this modest contribution. Here is a little background, though.

On Dec. 7, my friend Alice and I were enjoying a nice dinner at a local restaurant prior to attending a Kitsap Chordsmen concert (“Old Man Winter” at the North Kitsap Auditorium). At the conclusion of our meal, our courteous server (Stephanie) advised us that an anonymous young couple had paid our dinner tab in full! You might imagine the surprise and warm sense of wonderment we had at this totally unexpected news.

Beyond curiosity, we contemplated how to accept this. Well, it seems the best way to honor this touching act of random kindness is to pay it forward. Thus, please accept the modest contribution to the Poulsbo Lions/Raab Foundation Bellringer Fund as an acknowledgment of the generosity of that very kind young couple, and to say the teachable moment they provided is bearing a little fruit for unknown others.
