In talking with several chiropractors, I learned there is an increase of back problems among backpack users, which are directly related to improper usage of backpacks. The group that has the greatest number of problems are students who have adopted what they consider cool ways to carry backpacks, such as:
Using only one strap of a two-strap pack;
Wearing the pack very low on the back — Butt Bumper mode. (That’s cool?); and
Wearing single strap packs hanging on one shoulder instead of slung across the body.
The proper way to use a backpack can be found by doing a Google search or in several other ways.
For your lifetime health, wear the pack with the weight distributed across the body, way up high on the back, both straps properly placed on the shoulders, and use a weight distribution belt method if the pack is so designed.
If the pack is used with only one strap (pack hanging to one side) — cool? — or down low (Butt Bumper mode) — cooler? — the user, regardless of age, will eventually develop serious back problems, which can create lifetime back problems — not cool and definitely not fun.
