Let’s set the record straight on tolls. I have worked diligently to keep the bridge tolls low.

Beth Wilson recently wrote a letter (“What has Angel done to keep tolls low,” July 23) relating to my “no” vote on ESSB-6499.

This bill had nothing to do with toll rates. It removes the Washington State Patrol from involvement in toll infraction issuance and places this issuance in the hands of limited law enforcement officers designated by the Washington Department of Transportation.

It removed the court system.

It requires WSDOT to de-

velop an administrative adju-

dication process for ap-peals.

This bill expands the toll collection account used to allow operations that benefit multiple toll facilities to be cleared through this account.

This bill will take a photo of a license plate and send you a bill. Do you honestly believe that all the tourists passing through, if receiving a bill when they get home, will pay it?

This is lost revenue.

Do you believe this is a better system if you lose your day in court? Do you believe WSDOT can handle the accounting and appeals with accountability and efficiency?

I don’t, so I voted no.

Beth Wilson’s letter isn’t about toll rates. It’s politics.
