A kind, thoughtful and intelligent opinion was expressed May 6 in the North Kitsap Herald (“Redevelop Viking Ave., not forested wetland,” page A4).
In discussion about the proposed Edward Rose project on State Route 305 and Bond Road, the writer exclaims the intense and adverse impact that would be sustained if this development proceeds. He or she redirects the work to be considered instead to a more appropriate Viking Way site. He or she accurately emphasizes that multiple trees and wildlife subsist in, and depend on, the proposed area to be invaded. In addition to traffic congestion, two streams that support the natural habitat and animal population would be polluted.
Do we really need more concrete? Are economics, profit and city growth the only factors to consider?
On Mother’s Day, while driving near Kitsap Way I saw on the highway the bodies of two baby raccoons and their mother lying lifeless on the highway. Nearby were big bulldozers that had cleared their habitat to make way for new housing. It was heartbreaking to know that animal homes were being destroyed without any consideration or efforts to transfer them humanely. Is this not their world too?
When will people stop assuming that only their needs matter? Why can’t we co-exist? We may criticize others overseas for the destruction of the Amazon and more animals becoming extinct, but actually, we need to look in our own backyards.
Thank you.
