The sign continues
The continuing saga! The Hansville Advisory Council voted, in spite of the opposition of Eglon residents, to put up their “Welcome to Greater Hansville” sign at the Eglon – Little Boston Road intersection on Hansville Road.
The person in charge of the sign committee called me to say, although the sign was being installed, would I contact Eglon residents to ask their opinions of this action. In light of this being a futile exercise, I did so for the sake of the Eglon community. The results, which I conveyed to the sign person, were: 45 Eglon citizens said they did not want the sign at that intersection, which is not Hansville, 4 said the SW corner was preferable to the original planned location, five said the sign being there was OK, and one person was undecided.
He also told me that the people living in Cliffside, Shorewoods, and Driftwood Key were all in favor of the sign at the above intersection. When I asked him for specific numbers, he changed his statement to, “100 percent of the boards of each community were in favor of the sign.” In a letter sent out by this same sign committee person, he states that the above communities have asked for “identification at the corner where they turn left to go home.” Hmmmmm.
I was also informed by the sign person that Kitsap County contributed $2,500 of your taxpayer money to this sign. Was this a wise use of our tax dollars?
Wouldn’t it be better for all of us in the north end if decisions made brought harmony to our communities instead of alienation?

Donations needed
Hello Poulsbo!
The 3rd of July ‘Fireworks on the Fjord’ event is around the corner, many of the small businesses in Poulsbo always fund the event with various amounts of money. Last year we had over 80 donations from businesses and families, this year we have 9 donations to date. Businesses are just not able to come up with the donations. We started thinking about the citizens helping the businesses out so that the event can go on without a hitch.
Mike and I have been ordering port a potties, dumpsters and all of the behind the scene things. Fred Hill Materials is donating the sand again for the barge that holds the fireworks as they always do. They drive out to where the barge sits somewhere around Port Orchard and they spray the sand onto the barge. Thank you Hills!
The grass down at the waterfront is a year old now and thick and ready for many derrieres to sit and enjoy the color in the sky!
Donna Etchey is beginning the prep for the watermelon spitting, ice cream and pizza eating contests.Thank you to Tom from Central Market, Steve from Dominos, and Robin from Dairy Queen for the food! Lets see if Kit Wheeler and Lyn Bryars will win the seed spitting contest again!
The Crop Duster Air Plane club “Northwest Beech Boys” will fly overhead at around 6:30 while Harmony Madden sings “The Star Spangled Banner.”
A collection of cars and the double decker bus from Kathleen and Mike Hale from Hales Ales Brewery will also be down in Anderson Parkway to check out.

Red light runners
Sharpen your pitchforks
Throughout April and May the vast majority of Red-light Camera Tickets were written for running the red light in the southbound right hand turn only lane, at the corner of 16th and Warren. At least one traffic light camera reviewer believed the absence of a turn arrow light could possibly constitute a free right turn for this lane. Seeing an enormous revenue stream drying up the city took action to prevent this from happening. In what is akin to first issuing expired parking tickets, and then installing the parking meters, Larry Matel, P.E. (Pedestrian Exterminator?) –Managing Engineer, Transportation issued a memo on May 27th to Judge James Doctor, Lt Pete Fisher, and Mike Meacham.
Through the use of voodoo, manure, and flawed logic this memo contends that the two lights controlling southbound traffic are also for the right hand only turn lane. It further contends this was done deliberately, as part of the cities grand design to safeguard pedestrians crossing 16th. Pedestrian crossings at light controlled intersections are designed so that both vehicle and pedestrian traffic travel in the same direction in order to avoid contact. If a right turn arrow were installed for the right turn only lane, and remained red while thru traffic continued South this would avoid all potential contact between auto and pedestrian. Page 24 of the Washington Drivers Guide, as the Memo is fond of misquoting, states you may not travel in the direction of a red arrow. You may proceed after stopping only if it is safe to do so. Neither safety nor common sense can justify a turn signal not being here as the memo states. Through proper signalization those pedestrians crossing Warren could be better protected as well.
For those of you not lucky enough to have had your case dismissed as I was, I suggest you sharpen your pitchforks and head for City Hall. Only kidding, you may wish to look into a class action suit against the city for the return of your fines.
