High school sports: Fans’ conduct was unbecoming

Array

The recent Friday night game between Olympic High School and Kingston High School brought out the worst in the fan base for both schools. As a fan of the Olympic team, I was appalled to find that a rather large group of Kingston High fans had seated themselves in the heart of the Olympic stands. During the course of the game the Kingston group became loud and obnoxious demonstrating unsportsman-like conduct and disrespecting the Olympic fan base. The student fans for Olympic did not become overly disruptive and did not retaliate in any way. The true fans for Kingston High withstood the rain and supported their team from the bleachers provided for visiting teams.

Admittedly, I was caught up in the passion of support and did not demonstrate behavior that was appropriate. It was disheartening to see the behavior that was demonstrated by all. As I reflect upon everyone’s behavior my question is this: “why?” For me the “why” is based in a sincere desire to show support for my team Olympic, however misplaced it may have been that night. I apologize for that behavior.

It would behoove all high school football fans to learn the lesson I learned early in the season: respect. I failed to demonstrate respect for my team and more importantly Kingston failed to respect not only their team but every individual that was seated around them that were Olympic fans.
