The paper says “Poulsbo predicts seven figure shortfall in 2010 budget.” Mayor Kathryn Quade in the Kitsap voters’ pamphlet says she’s proud of putting “Poulsbo on a solid financial footing.” Does anyone see something inconsistent in these two statements?
Quade, in her first annual budget after being elected mayor, increased city spending in 2007 by 22 percent over 2006. Did this huge increase and subsequent increases contribute to the $1.1 million deficit? To what extent do the wages and benefits for this assistant contribute to the $1.1 million deficit?
Quade has led the campaign to build a lavish city hall in downtown Poulsbo. To what extent has the increased costs of the land, building and supporting infrastructure contributed to the $1.1 million deficit?
Quade led the charge to pay $71,000 for yet another traffic study that led to the multitude of new stop signs at vital intersections such as 4th and Viewmont. To what extent did this contribute to the $1.1 million deficit?
There are two sides to a deficit issue — revenue and spending. Sure revenue is down. But would we have a $1.1 million deficit is reasonable restraint had been excercised since Quade’s election as mayor?
I think it’s time for a change. Vote Becky Erickson for Mayor.
