As the saying goes, “In this day of (fill in the blank) …”
Police are getting a bad rap everywhere we look. I want to take just a minute to sing the praises of the Bremerton Police Department.
Last week, it was 18 degrees in Bremerton. I knew there was a severe weather shelter here because I saw a roller sign on a bus announcing it (which, in itself, is a pretty cool thing that Bremerton did).
I also knew there was a homeless man living in a cove on the beach near my house. I called the shelter to ask if someone could go get the man and bring him to the shelter because I have a leg owie and could not get down to the beach. The shelter workers told me there were only two of them there and they could not leave but if I could somehow get the man there that he would be welcome.
So, I called the office number for the Bremerton Police Department, waded through all the extensions until I got to the second watch sergeant’s voice mail. I left a message, not expecting to hear back but to my surprise at around 9 p.m.
I received a call from a patrol officer saying he was actually down the stairs, on the beach, had found a homeless man’s camp and wanted to tell me the man was not there but he had lots of blankets and a makeshift tent and should be fine for the night.
I could not believe that any police department would go to such lengths on the coldest night of the year and then have the courtesy to actually call me to make me feel better about it.
Truly unbelievable. I wish I could remember the name of the patrol officer (sorry, sir) but kudos to him and his sergeant (Plum, I think was his name) for proving what great people work in the Bremerton Police Department.
Wow, nothing short of wonderful.
