Cruz no danger
To the editor:
Being one of the original individuals to bring “The Cruz” to Port Orchard and watch it become one of Kitsap County’s largest one-day festivals has made me and the entire South Kitsap community proud.
That this family-friendly tradition is now leaving this perfect venue, many are saddened and confused as to how this could happen.
City leaders have pointed out concerns of moving vehicles and spectators, and the Saints Car Club has offered a more than reasonable solution to only a feared problem.
For example, as a member of the Oldtimers NW car club, our group was tasked to host a “Goodguys Hot Rod and Custom” event at the Puyallup fairgrounds that draws 3,000-plus cars and thousands of spectators. Participants are not only allowed to cruise their cars among the throngs of spectators but are encouraged to do so. The Port Orchard Cruz and the Goodguys event, both with over three decades of history, have never had an injury.
Is this to say it is not a possibility, no, nor is it not a possibility to say that an asteroid won’t strike in the next five minutes. Perhaps the next casualty will be at the Fathoms of Fun Parade, the 4th of July Fireworks or the Tree Lighting Ceremony.
My point is our community needs gathering such as “The Cruz” as it brings a sense of unity at a time when it is sorely needed. Besides, if we alter our way of life in fear of danger, the terrorists have won.
