No more rights
To the editor:
President Trump promised to deport all undocumented immigrants currently in the US. He claims there’s an invasion threatening America. Actually, these immigrants are valuable members of the communities in which they live and work. The government is indiscriminately detaining and deporting anyone who is undocumented, including US citizens, and those with legal status. In an effort to speed up deportations Trump has invoked the Wartime Alien Enemies Act, intended to be used when there is a war with a foreign government.
Trump’s actions, are slipping quietly into the constitutional First Amendment freedoms guaranteed to everyone in the United States, citizens and non-citizens alike. There are limited exceptions and the government can take action against immigrants when such freedoms are abused or threaten the United States.
Recently, the government has revoked more than 300 student visas, targeting people whose only transgression appears to be activism. Many others have had their Legal Permanent Residency revoked because of their research or opinions. Trump said his priorities were to deport criminals or people who are a security risk. Many of the people being targeted have committed no crimes and are in the country legally. In addition, he is threatening and disparaging attorneys who represent immigrants. The president is trying to silence anyone who disagrees with his agenda. It begs the question…When will he silence your rights?
