In a recent letter to the editor entitled “Social justice event strayed from its mission,” Mick Sheldon wrote disparagingly of the recent county human rights meet-and-greet. In doing so, he blatantly misrepresented a group I volunteer for, RESULTS.
He mentioned groups at this event saying that we “support left-wing policies like abortion rights, sanctuary cities, Democratic political candidates and tax increases.” Nothing could be further from the truth.
I spoke with many people at this event and passed out fliers about RESULTS, telling them that we are a non-partisan citizens’ advocacy group who meet with our congressional representatives and work with the media to end of poverty in the areas of education, health, and economic opportunity. I don’t recall Mr. Sheldon coming and talking to me. If he and others want to know more, they could visit our website, www.results.org.
This Thanksgiving, more than ever, I’m so grateful for my fellow RESULTS volunteers and our donors.
We helped stop some harmful proposals in Washington which will impact millions of lives. Because of RESULTS volunteers’ tenacity, we helped stop proposals that would have decimated Medicaid, the primary source of health coverage for more than 60 million low-income individuals and families.
We protected and even expanded funding in the foreign aid budget for basic education, life-saving maternal and child health programs, and efforts to end the major diseases of poverty.
With our advocacy to pass the READ Act, we’ve taken an important step toward a world where every child has access to a quality education. The READ Act was one of the few pieces of legislation to move through Congress in a bipartisan way in 2017.
So get the facts straight … but moreover, consider helping RESULTS!
