BREMERTON — One unit of the Quality Inn off Kitsap Way sustained minor damage after a malfunctioning stove caught fire Thursday, Feb. 4.
According to Mike Six with the Bremerton Fire Department, they “originally thought it was a cooking fire, but it looks more like a defective stove or a switch in the stove.”
“It actually burned up the wall pretty good,” Six said.
He said the tenant was getting ready to cook lunch, but hadn’t even turned the stove on when she briefly stepped out of the apartment. The fire started when she wasn’t in the room, and actually “auto-extinguished” by the time the firefighters arrived, Six said.
“It was pretty standard, pretty cookie-cutter,” Six said.
There were no injuries, but the fire caused about $10,000 worth of damage, which Six said included replacing the stove, thoroughly cleaning and replacing the apartment, replacing the wall and sheet rock, and damage to the surrounding cabinets. He said the damage was contained to only that unit, but there was smoke damage throughout the room.
