As a Kitsap resident and student at Western Washington University, I wanted to give my time and talents to my community. Fishline in Poulsbo proved to be the perfect place for me.
The moment I walked into the facility, I was met with kindness and appreciation. I got matched up to the HomeShare Program because of my interests. This program is a creative and effective solution to the housing needs of our area. Those who are looking for a place to live are introduced to providers with extra space in their home. This can be especially valuable for someone on a fixed income or a person who would like to trade services for rent.
While being active in this program, my eyes were opened to the housing needs in Kitsap County. With rent going up and wages not compensating for this increase, it’s easy to see how many of our friends and colleagues could be affected. It’s not just us — that this is an emergency on a state and national level as well.
Nov. 11-19 is Homeless Awareness Week. I’d like to use this opportunity to draw attention to the programs and services available at Fishline and encourage everyone this holiday season to be aware of those who need our help and act on it.
