After having read the recent editorial about Viking Avenue, I have to agree it is time to talk about what the future could hold. Hearing about new developments in Poulsbo disturbs me because it just makes Poulsbo look like a smaller Silverdale. Big-name stores and chains will just continue to make Poulsbo look like everyone else. Poulsbo is unique in setting and history and has the ability to attract tourists with its charm and first-class restaurants.

And so, what could be done with Viking Avenue? Poulsbo Farmers Market was the fastest-growing market in the state last year. It continues to grow this year and will be the first farmers market on the peninsula to extend its season all the way through to Dec. 17 so even Christmas dinner can be made up of local foods. And, Poulsbo Farmers Market is looking for a permanent home to serve locals and tourists year round. With the new tractor store on Viking, a new, large Farmers Market would be a perfect anchor to an agricultural based shopping community. Kitsap has rural roots and without keeping and encouraging those local farms there is no local food.

Poulsbo Farmers Market is an amazing local asset for Poulsbo and the surrounding areas. Being non-profit, we do not have the money it would take to complete the vision. It is a vision of what the future will and must be in these ever-changing and challenging times. Hopefully there is someone willing to help, who has the same vision.
