What precedent is the city of Poulsbo trying to set by selling public parks to make money for the new City Hall building?
According to Chapter 8 of the Comprehensive Plan documents, the key overarching goals reflected in this chapter include: Continue to develop and enhance active and passive parks, recreation programs and facilities, and open spaces that benefit residents of all ages, incomes and physical abilities.
The city is proposing to sell off two of our parks — Kiwanis Scandia Knoll/Betty Iverson Park and the Mitch Mitchusson Park/Klingel property — to fund their city hall project.
They are proposing the change the zoning of Kiwanis/Scandia Knoll/Betty Iverson Park to high density with 38 apartment units. More traffic, more congestion, more roads, more noise in our once-quiet neighborhood.
I guess I am naive enough to think that parks should last forever.
There is a meeting at City Hall chambers on July 28 at 7 p.m. to discuss those proposals. Please feel free to attend.
For the last 25 years, we have enjoyed walking, picnicking and enjoying this beautiful open space. This park has Poulsbo’s only handicapped-accessible play structure that was installed in the fall of 2008. If Kiwanis Park could be lost, what is next? Lions Park?
