Senior center deserves community’s support

Array

Thanks for the article by Charlie Bermant explaining the crisis at the Port Orchard Senior Center. I attended the meeting on Saturday and was impressed by the amount of folks attending and the discussion led by Tim Matthes, candidate for county commissioner from District 2 and Sandra LaCelle, candidate from District 1.

It’s a shame that such a nice facility and location has lost support from both City Council and Kitsap County. Seniors are a great asset to our society and the needs for the Senior Center and the Community Center are as vital as new walking and biking lanes.

The folks in the community need to step up and take part in this facility. Until recently I did not know there was a Senior Center in

Port Orchard.

It’s a great place for seniors to meet, discuss current events and have fun. Keeping our seniors mentally and physically active is important to their health and will delay their dependence on being on the medical rolls.

One suggestion would be for the county and the city of Port Orchard to appoint a part-time coordinator to handle the activities at the comunity center.

This could be offset by having the rooms not being used by the seniors available for community use for a small fee.

Yes, both my husband and I joined and intend to become active in this group.
