As a veteran and Kitsap County resident, I am supporting the Veterans and Human Services Levy in the upcoming election. Current programs are not funded to the degree necessary to help veterans and their families who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness. The situation will only get worse as the troops return home from the Middle East to high unemployment and a sluggish economy.
This levy provides funds specifically earmarked to provide assistance to those who need it. It also allows for transparency through the creation of two separate boards to oversee and report on the way the funds are used.
I believe it is important to be part of a community that cares about its citizens, and this is a small price to pay to help out veterans, their families and others in need. At least I know that the money will be used to help those who are not as fortunate as I am. If the roles were reversed, it would be nice to know that my family and I would have the support of our community to help get us through the rough patches.
